Red light therapy can improve hair density in suitable people with male or female pattern hair loss. It works best as a planned course with a device intended for hair treatment, a clear diagnosis and consistent use. Progress develops over months, so choosing a routine you can maintain matters more than expecting an overnight change.
Start with the type of hair loss
Pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia, gradually changes the thickness and growth cycle of susceptible hair follicles. Red light therapy has been studied for this condition. A randomised, sham-controlled trial found improvements in terminal hair density with the tested low-level light devices. Those findings support the treatment category; they do not make every red lamp, wavelength or schedule interchangeable.
Sudden shedding, smooth bald patches, a sore scalp and scarring need a different assessment. Treating every form of hair loss as an energy shortage can delay the right care. If the cause is unclear, a dermatologist can establish what you are treating and whether light therapy belongs in your plan.
What light therapy does for follicles
Photobiomodulation uses controlled light exposure to influence biological activity. Researchers investigate changes in cellular energy and signalling as possible contributors to the hair response. These mechanisms help explain the treatment, but a laboratory change in ATP is not a measurement of how many hairs an individual will grow.
The useful outcome is visible, sustained improvement in the treated area. Light therapy works with eligible existing follicles; it cannot recreate follicles that have been permanently destroyed. Pattern hair loss may need ongoing management, so discuss a maintenance plan as you review your course and results.
Choose a device with a Hair programme
The Celluma Asia range includes the original RESTORE, RESTORE II and MYSTIQUE as featured hair options. NOVA also includes Hair mode. Their other programmes differ, so choose according to your complete goal rather than assuming every Celluma panel treats every concern.
- The original RESTORE combines Hair, Acne and Wrinkles programmes.
- RESTORE II combines Hair, Wrinkles and Pain programmes.
- MYSTIQUE offers face and scalp programmes in a mask format.
- NOVA offers Hair within a broader five-mode panel.
Confirm the exact model, its eligible users and its current instructions. A Wrinkles programme on another device is not a substitute for a labelled Hair programme.
Build a course you can follow
Use the schedule supplied for your model and application. For example, Celluma's published Hair protocol specifies every-other-day use over 16 weeks. This illustrates why hair treatment should be planned as a course rather than judged after a few sessions. Check the current manual for the model you own, including suitability, positioning and eye protection.
Keep the scalp clean and dry, and position the device so the relevant scalp area receives the light. If dense hair obstructs the treatment area, follow the model's guidance on parting it. Select Hair mode yourself and let its programmed session run as directed. Adding extra sessions to make up for missed use does not establish faster growth.
Track change fairly
Take baseline and monthly photographs with the same parting, lighting, angle and hair condition. A wet scalp, a different haircut or a brighter overhead light can make density look dramatically different. Note changes in shedding, coverage and styling ease so you have a practical record to review alongside the photographs.
If you also use minoxidil or another prescribed treatment, agree the combination with your clinician. Do not stop a treatment that is working simply because you add a device. For help choosing the format and mode combination, compare the Celluma hair options and ask Celluma Asia to demonstrate the setup you will use at home.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I give red light therapy for hair growth?
Think in months. Complete the course in your model instructions and compare consistent photographs at planned intervals. Your starting condition and response help determine when visible changes become apparent.
Can I use any red light device on my scalp?
Choose a device with an intended hair-growth application. Wavelength alone does not establish that its coverage, dose or protocol is appropriate for the scalp.
Does it replace minoxidil or a hair-loss consultation?
It can be one part of a hair-loss plan. A clinician can confirm the diagnosis and advise whether to combine treatments; do not change prescribed treatment independently.
Which is the practical first step?
Identify your hair-loss pattern, then compare the Hair mode devices for scalp coverage, comfort, other programmes and the routine you can sustain.
