How Close Should Red Light Therapy Be? Positioning Your Device Correctly

The Celluma Journal · Updated

Use the treatment distance and positioning method in the manual for your exact device. There is no universal rule that every LED panel must touch the skin. For Celluma Series 2 large and small panels, the current instructions describe close placement while leaving a gap for air circulation.

Why distance matters

The distance and angle between a light source and the treatment area influence how the light is distributed. A device is designed to be used under particular conditions, so changing the setup can change the exposure. This is why the recommended positioning belongs with the programme, not as an optional detail.

Ask where any published output measurement was taken. A number measured at the LED surface is not automatically the same as the exposure at the recommended working distance. Useful specifications connect the measurement with the way the device is used.

Why a single inverse-square chart is not enough

The inverse-square relationship is commonly introduced with an ideal point source. A therapy panel contains many emitters, and its light distribution depends on their geometry and optics. A generic chart cannot establish that every panel delivers exactly 40% at one inch or 6% at four inches.

Likewise, zero centimetres cannot be treated as a universal 100% transfer of emitted energy into target cells. Tissue reflects, scatters and absorbs light in complex ways. The optical properties of tissue are another reason to avoid turning a simple diagram into a personal dosing tool.

What Celluma's panel manual says

The Series 2 large and small panel manual instructs users to position the device close to the skin and leave a gap for air circulation. It also includes support arrangements, eye-protection guidance and model-specific handling instructions. Close positioning and ventilation should be considered together.

This is different from forcing a panel flat against every contour or tightening it simply to eliminate air. Use the rests, supports or straps only as instructed for your model and treatment area. A mask, a handheld POD and a larger panel do not necessarily share one setup.

A practical positioning check

  • Identify the exact model and the intended treatment area.
  • Review the positioning illustration for that application.
  • Set the device on the correct support or use the permitted attachment method.
  • Keep the specified spacing and ventilation clear.
  • Use eye protection according to the instructions and avoid looking into the LEDs.
  • Confirm the device is stable before starting the programme.

If the panel moves or feels awkward, pause and correct the setup. A stable, comfortable position is more useful than continuing while repeatedly adjusting the device.

Coverage is part of the choice

A smaller device may fit a focused area conveniently, while a larger panel can cover more of the intended surface at once. Neither size is automatically superior for every goal. Compare how the treatment area fits and whether the instructed course is practical with that format.

The flexible design of many Celluma panels gives options for positioning around different areas. This helps you arrange the treatment area within the device's intended setup. Follow the recommended shape, support and spacing to make placement comfortable and repeatable.

Do not compensate with extra time

If a setup seems difficult, do not increase duration or power to compensate for an unmeasured distance. Ask for a demonstration. The programme and the geometry are designed to be used together, and a guessed adjustment creates a different exposure.

Celluma Asia can demonstrate a panel such as PRO II or help compare a more targeted format such as POD II. Bring the treatment area you want to address so the demonstration answers your real question. For understanding the numbers behind the setup, read our wavelength and specification guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does LED therapy always need direct skin contact?

No. Follow the specific device instructions. The Celluma Series 2 panel manual describes close positioning with a gap for air circulation.

Can I calculate the right distance from a generic online chart?

A generic chart does not establish the exposure from your particular array and optics. Use the tested positioning in the manual.

Is a rigid mask automatically ineffective?

No. A device should be evaluated at its intended working distance with its programme and evidence. Shape alone does not settle effectiveness.

What if I cannot position my panel comfortably?

Pause and get setup advice rather than forcing the device or extending the session. A demonstration can help you choose the right support or format.
