Which Types of Hair Loss Can Red Light Therapy Help?

The Celluma Journal · Updated

The strongest established use of low-level red light for hair growth is androgenetic alopecia, commonly called male or female pattern hair loss. Other causes of shedding need their own assessment. Choosing a suitable treatment starts with identifying the type of hair loss, then matching the device and programme to it.

Pattern hair loss: the clearest treatment match

Pattern hair loss involves progressive changes in susceptible follicles and the hairs they produce. Men may notice recession or crown thinning; women often notice a wider part or reduced density over the central scalp. Appearance alone is not always enough for diagnosis.

Randomised sham-controlled trials have reported increased hair density with specific low-level light devices in men and women with pattern loss. These results support a treatment option, without implying that every user regrows all lost hair. Device eligibility, the extent of thinning and the ability to follow the routine remain relevant.

Shedding after stress, illness or childbirth

Telogen effluvium is a different process: more hairs than usual enter a shedding phase after a trigger. The useful first task is to identify that trigger and determine whether another type of hair loss is also present. A nutritional deficiency, a recent illness or a medication change may need attention independently of any device.

Evidence for light treatment is less established for this type of shedding than for pattern hair loss. Recovery after childbirth or illness follows its own course; an eight-week LED schedule cannot predict when it will settle. Identifying the trigger helps you choose the right next step.

Patchy, traction-related or scarring loss

Sudden patches, scalp inflammation, persistent tenderness or signs of scarring need a dermatologist’s attention. Alopecia areata, traction alopecia and scarring disorders do not share the same cause. A programme studied for androgenetic alopecia is not automatically a treatment for them.

For traction-related loss, relieving the pulling force is an important practical step. In scarring disorders, early treatment to control the underlying condition matters. LED has not been shown to recreate a follicle that has been destroyed.

What Celluma’s hair clearance actually covers

The FDA record for Celluma RESTORE, K211038, specifies androgenetic alopecia within named male and female pattern classifications and Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV. It is not a clearance for every cause of hair loss. Check the current labelling for the exact model and market before choosing treatment.

Choose a model with Hair mode. Current options include different dedicated and multi-purpose formats, so coverage and fit can guide the choice after suitability is established. The Celluma Hair routine explains scalp preparation and the treatment schedule without treating more frequent use as automatically better.

Set up a useful progress review

Take photographs of the same parting, crown and hairline with the hair in a comparable condition. Wet hair, a different haircut, styling fibres or a changed camera angle can dramatically alter apparent density. Review a course over months, rather than comparing daily shedding counts.

If you use minoxidil or another prescribed treatment, discuss how the device fits into that plan. Do not discontinue an effective medicine because a light programme has been added. After a hair transplant, the treating surgeon should decide whether, when and how any device can be used around healing grafts.

Explore Celluma RESTORE II or the broader Celluma range once the treatment goal is clear. The team can help with the model’s operation and fit; diagnosis belongs with the appropriate clinician.

Frequently asked questions

Does red light therapy work for women?

Clinical studies have included women with pattern hair loss. The appropriate device, labelling and diagnosis still matter; diffuse shedding in women can have several causes.

Does it block DHT?

A hair-growth light device does not work as a DHT-blocking medicine. Its proposed mechanism is different, and it may be considered alongside other appropriate treatments.

Is increased shedding proof that it is working?

No. New or worsening shedding should be assessed in context rather than automatically labelled a positive response. Contact your clinician if it is marked, prolonged or accompanied by scalp symptoms.

Can I start immediately after a hair transplant?

Follow your surgeon’s postoperative instructions. Timing, positioning and pressure around new grafts require individual guidance; do not adopt a universal start date from a general article.
