FDA cleared, FDA approved and FDA registered mean different things. Clearance through the 510(k) pathway involves a finding of substantial equivalence to a legally marketed device for specified uses. Approval is a different regulatory pathway. Registration and listing are administrative requirements and do not establish product clearance or approval.

FDA cleared: the 510(k) pathway

A 510(k) submission compares a proposed device with a legally marketed predicate. FDA reviews the information needed to determine substantial equivalence, including intended use and relevant technological characteristics. The decision relates to the device and the indications in its labelling.

It is not accurate to say every clearance requires a new large clinical trial. FDA explains that clinical data are not needed for most devices cleared through 510(k). Testing and evidence requirements depend on the device and the questions that need to be addressed.

FDA approved: a different process

Approval is commonly associated with premarket approval for certain higher-risk devices. The FDA’s consumer explanation distinguishes approval from other ways products are regulated. Calling a cleared LED device “FDA approved” is not a more confident version of the same statement; it changes its meaning.

The Celluma records linked below document FDA clearance. That is a useful, verifiable statement without needing to upgrade the language to approval.

FDA registered: a listing, not a treatment verdict

Establishment registration and device listing identify relevant businesses and devices within FDA’s system. They are part of regulatory administration. Registration does not mean FDA has reviewed and cleared every performance claim made about a product.

A registration certificate displayed in an advertisement should therefore prompt a precise question: what, separately, is the device’s marketing authorisation and intended use? The answer may involve clearance, approval, an exemption or another applicable pathway. Avoid treating the absence of one phrase as proof of illegality without checking the product’s classification.

Why the indication matters more than a badge

A clearance for one use does not cover every use a seller can imagine. Wrinkles, acne, androgenetic alopecia and circumference reduction are distinct applications. A biological explanation involving mitochondria does not broaden the label to fatigue, dementia, weight loss or repair of an injured structure.

Likewise, a model name within a brand is not enough. Different generations and models can offer different programmes. Check the product you will actually receive and the instructions supplied with it.

Two Celluma records you can inspect

The Celluma RESTORE record K211038 addresses androgenetic alopecia within specified eligibility criteria. The Celluma CONTOUR record K232977 includes circumference reduction of the hips, waist and thighs. These are concrete examples of why exact intended-use language is more useful than a general “FDA” logo.

To verify a claim, use the official 510(k) database, search the manufacturer or K-number, open the record and read the indications. Compare them with the model, treatment purpose and market information given by the seller. Ask for clarification if the trade name differs rather than guessing a match.

Use verification to make your decision simpler

Regulatory status is one part of a purchase decision, alongside relevant evidence, fit, instructions and support. It does not promise an identical result for every person or certify every scientific statement in a blog post.

For practical document checks, continue with our LED device safety and testing checklist. When exploring the Celluma range, ask the team to connect your preferred model with its available programmes and documentation. You should leave the discussion knowing what the device is intended to do and how to use it.

Frequently asked questions

Is FDA cleared the same as FDA approved?

No. They refer to different regulatory pathways. Use the exact term stated in the official record for the product.

Does FDA registered mean the device works?

Registration and listing do not establish clearance, approval or efficacy for a particular claim. Look for the separate regulatory basis and evidence for the intended use.

Does Class II automatically mean every claim is cleared?

No. Classification describes the regulatory category, not unlimited treatment permission. The exact device and indications still need to be checked.

Can a Celluma clearance cover every Celluma model?

Do not assume that. Verify the model, generation and listed programmes against the applicable documentation. Brand-level statements should not replace model-specific information.
