LED photobiomodulation uses controlled light exposure to influence biological activity in the treated area. For ageing skin, clinical studies have measured changes in wrinkles, texture and other skin properties after repeated treatment. Those findings support a purposeful skin routine, with expectations tied to the device and protocol rather than a guaranteed cellular rebuild.
The skin structures researchers investigate
The dermis contains cells and a surrounding matrix that help give skin its structure. Fibroblasts contribute to that matrix, including collagen. Their behaviour depends on signals from their environment as well as the resources they need to work.
Light research examines these responses alongside the appearance of the skin. It is useful to distinguish a proposed mechanism from the effect a person can see. A change in a molecular marker can support an explanation, but it cannot substitute for clinical measurement.
From light exposure to a measured outcome
Some incident light is reflected or scattered, and some is absorbed in tissue. Its distribution depends on wavelength, the treatment setup and tissue characteristics. It is not accurate to give every person a fixed depth at which all red photons stop and all near-infrared photons begin working.
Absorbed light can affect signalling pathways involved in cellular responses. For skin rejuvenation, researchers have examined both clinical appearance and tissue changes. In the randomised split-face study by Lee and colleagues, specific red and near-infrared settings were investigated with clinical and laboratory assessments. This was research using its own equipment and protocol, not a guarantee for every LED device.
What does the clinical evidence measure?
Look for outcomes that match your question. Fine-line scores describe appearance. Surface measurements describe texture. Ultrasound or biopsy findings provide other information about tissue. Participant satisfaction is valuable, but differs from an independent assessment made without knowing which treatment was used.
The strongest interpretation keeps those distinctions visible. For example, a smoother appearance after a treatment course is a meaningful skin outcome. An improvement in appearance does not mean that every collagen fibre has been replaced or that the ageing process has stopped.
LED and topical skincare can have different roles
LED can fit into a broader skin plan. Skincare can also influence processes below the skin’s surface, depending on the ingredient and formulation. Some topical ingredients, including retinoids, have established uses for fine lines. A moisturiser can also improve comfort and the appearance of dryness, even though that is a different outcome from changing dermal structure.
For Celluma, keep treatment preparation simple and follow the model’s instructions. Apply suitable skincare afterwards. Our guide to serums, sunscreen and LED timing explains how to fit treatment into your regular skincare sequence.
Make your treatment course easy to assess
Choose a device with the programme and coverage you need. Use a consistent starting photograph and repeat it without filters, altered lighting or a different facial expression. Record sessions so that you know whether the intended routine has actually been followed.
Review progress over the treatment course rather than after each exposure. If your goal is deeper folds, significant laxity or a separate skin condition, ask whether another treatment or assessment is more suitable. A focused plan is more useful than expecting every sign of ageing to respond equally.

Frequently asked questions
Is LED skin treatment the same as laser resurfacing?
No. Photobiomodulation aims to influence cellular activity with a defined light exposure. Resurfacing procedures use different mechanisms and have different treatment experiences, goals and recovery requirements.
Is heat a sign that collagen is being produced?
No. Heat sensation is not a measure of collagen change. Follow the comfort and use instructions for the device, and stop an exposure that feels unusually hot or uncomfortable.
Can one treatment permanently remove wrinkles?
A single LED session does not permanently remove wrinkles. Skin studies usually assess repeated treatment, and results should be interpreted in the context of that course.
Which Celluma mode should I choose?
For facial wrinkles, choose Wrinkles on a model that provides it. The preset programme defines the treatment; follow the current manual rather than manually combining unrelated settings.
