A red light therapy cabin can be effective when its design and treatment protocol are supported for the intended application. To choose between a cabin and a targeted panel, compare the treatment you want, the device’s evidence, its coverage and how comfortably it fits your routine.

Judge the system by the question it answers

A cabin usually offers a large illuminated area, while a panel can concentrate treatment on a selected region. That difference matters for convenience and positioning. It does not tell you, on its own, which system has been studied for acne, wrinkles, pain or another goal.

Ask for research on the actual system or a clearly comparable treatment design. A randomised trial of whole-body photobiomodulation reported benefits in people with fibromyalgia. Those results apply to the device and protocol studied. When comparing a cabin with a panel, ask how each option’s research relates to the treatment you want.

Understand output at the treatment surface

Irradiance describes the optical power reaching an area; exposure time contributes to the total energy delivered. A useful specification identifies where the measurement was made. Output quoted close to a light source may differ from output at the position where someone actually stands or lies.

For a cabin, ask about the recommended body position and coverage across that space. For a panel, ask about the intended distance and placement. Celluma’s explanation of treatment parameters brings wavelength, output, time and positioning together. Those settings should be assessed as a system.

Why distance needs a careful explanation

Distance can change the light reaching skin, but a simple point-source inverse-square calculation should not be applied automatically to a large LED array at close range. Panel size, optics, angle and the contribution of neighbouring LEDs affect the distribution.

The practical answer is to use measurements and instructions for the actual device. Direct skin contact is not a universal requirement for photobiomodulation. For Celluma, follow the model’s specified position and ventilation guidance in its current user manual, rather than assuming that eliminating every gap improves treatment.

Compare evidence and safety alongside convenience

Ask which application the device is intended to address and what its regulatory documentation actually covers. FDA clearance identifies the device and its cleared indications. Check that the intended treatment appears in that device’s documentation.

Then review the treatment experience. Can you hold the required position comfortably? What eye protection is specified? Is there clear guidance for light sensitivity, relevant medicines and other contraindications? If choosing equipment for a practice, include staff setup, cleaning, servicing and the room space needed.

Brightness and warmth are not substitutes for this information. A visually impressive installation may be convenient, but a useful buying decision still depends on the application and the documented operating conditions.

Where a flexible Celluma panel fits

A flexible panel is a practical option when you want to position treatment around the face or a targeted body area. Celluma’s named programmes let you select the intended application without manually designing the treatment settings. Check the exact model for its available modes.

For example, PRO II brings together Acne, Wrinkles and Aches & Pain. NOVA includes those programmes plus Hair and Contour. The choice becomes clearer when you compare the treatments you need, the area you want to cover and the routine you can maintain.

Frequently asked questions

Are red light cabins automatically less effective than panels?

No. Evidence depends on the specific device, application and protocol. A cabin and a panel should be compared using those details, not the format alone.

Does red light therapy have to touch the skin?

No universal contact rule applies to every device. Use the manufacturer’s recommended treatment position, spacing and supports.

Is a more powerful red light system always better?

A higher output figure alone does not establish a better treatment. Its measurement position, coverage, exposure time and supporting evidence all matter.

What should I ask a provider before booking a cabin session?

Ask which device is used, which outcome the session is intended for, what evidence supports that use, and what screening and eye protection are required.
