The Celluma Journal · Updated
Follow the eye-protection and positioning instructions for your exact LED device. A safety standard or a low-risk label does not mean every exposure, distance or use is appropriate. For Celluma, the current model manual is the practical reference for protection, spacing and precautions.
What photobiological safety testing means
IEC 62471 provides a framework for evaluating photobiological hazards from lamps and lamp systems, including relevant LED sources. It covers exposure limits, measurement methods and classification. This helps assess a device under stated conditions.
The result applies to the conditions assessed, including the source, configuration, distance and exposure. Use the device within its instructions so your setup follows the intended conditions. Ask for the report or declaration relevant to the model rather than assuming every product from a brand shares one classification.
Read the model instructions before the first session
Check which eye protection is supplied or specified, how the device is positioned and whether any personal precautions apply. The Celluma Series 2 large and small panel manual includes guidance on avoiding direct viewing of the LEDs, using the provided goggles or appropriate protection, and leaving room for air circulation.
Different formats can have different arrangements. A panel, a face mask and a handheld device should not be treated as identical. Keep the supplied manual as your practical reference and ask Celluma Asia to demonstrate the protection and positioning for that model and market.
Set up a protected, stable session
Position the device using its recommended supports. Keep the controller accessible and make sure the panel will remain stable through the programme. Use the eye protection as directed, with a fit that stays in place. Do not stare at exposed LEDs while checking the light output.
Closing your eyes, wearing ordinary sunglasses or looking at a photograph of someone using a device does not replace the instructions. Equally, you do not need to invent additional barriers that obstruct ventilation or interfere with the intended setup. Ask for a demonstration if you are unsure how the supplied accessories should fit.
Personal eye history matters
Tell a relevant clinician about an eye condition, recent eye procedure, light sensitivity or medicines that may affect sensitivity before beginning when the manual calls for advice. A routine designed for the skin should not be improvised as an eye treatment.
The purpose is to establish an appropriate plan, not to assume that everyone with a particular history can use any device in the same way. Avoid generic internet lists that say a certain pair of goggles automatically solves every contraindication.
Know when to pause
If the light causes discomfort, pause the session and check the positioning and protection. Persistent eye discomfort, a vision change or another concerning symptom warrants professional assessment. Do not continue simply because the device has an automatic timer or a safety badge.
Treat a comfortable setup as part of correct use. You do not need to look into the panel to verify effectiveness, and a stronger visible sensation is not a measure of treatment quality.
Keep accessories clean and available
Follow the instructions for cleaning, storage and sharing accessories. If more than one person uses a device, check the recommended hygiene arrangements. Replace damaged accessories through the appropriate support channel rather than improvising an unsuitable substitute.
Keep the manual beside the device or save the current version where you can find it. That makes it easy to recheck the setup when treating a different area or helping another eligible user.
Celluma Asia can demonstrate the protection and positioning for the model you are considering. Read our distance and positioning guide alongside the current manuals, and ask for clarification before your first session if anything is unclear.
Frequently asked questions
Does IEC 62471 mean I can look directly at the LEDs?
No. The standard evaluates hazards under defined conditions. Follow your model’s instructions on viewing, distance and protection.
Are closed eyes always enough protection?
Do not assume that. Use the eye-protection arrangement specified for the device and application.
Can I use a skin LED device to treat my eyes?
Do not repurpose it for an eye condition. A skin-treatment indication is not an eye-treatment indication; seek appropriate professional advice.
What should I ask before buying?
Ask which instructions and testing documents apply to the exact model, what protection is included, and how to position the device correctly for your intended area.
