For a Celluma acne session, begin with clean, bare, dry skin, choose the Acne programme on a compatible model and follow its instructions for positioning and timing. Apply your usual suitable skincare afterwards. You do not need an acid peel, a special serum or a complicated ritual to prepare the skin for treatment.
Before you begin: match the programme to your acne
Light-based treatment can be part of a plan for mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne. The American Academy of Dermatology explains that visible-light devices treat pimples differently from blackheads, whiteheads, cysts and nodules. Deep painful lesions or acne that is scarring need a dermatologist’s treatment plan rather than a longer home session.
Check that the exact Celluma model offers Acne mode. Mode availability is not identical across the range, and a Wrinkles programme should not be substituted simply because it also uses light.
Steps 1–3: prepare without overworking the skin
- Check your instructions. Read the model’s intended use, eye guidance and relevant precautions. If you use a medicine that may cause light sensitivity, check compatibility with your prescriber or pharmacist.
- Cleanse gently. Remove makeup, sunscreen and skincare from the treatment area with a cleanser that suits your skin. A second cleanse is useful when needed to remove residue, not a rule that every person must scrub twice.
- Pat dry and leave skin bare. Do not add an exfoliating acid, serum, facial oil or moisturiser as a compulsory pre-treatment step. Avoid picking or squeezing spots while preparing.
Keeping preparation gentle helps make the routine repeatable. It also avoids creating irritation that could be mistaken for a reaction to light therapy.
Steps 4–5: select Acne mode and complete the programme
- Position the device as directed. Shape or fit it around the treatment area using the approved supports. Close positioning does not mean pressing a flexible panel firmly onto active lesions. Follow the model’s spacing and eye-protection instructions.
- Select Acne and start the timer. Let the programmed treatment run as directed. For example, the current MYSTIQUE manual describes three 30-minute acne treatments per week over four weeks. Check the manual supplied for your own model and region before adopting a schedule.
The session length forms part of the programme’s delivery of light over time. The session length belongs to that device’s designed protocol. Cellular responses vary, and another device may use a different validated duration.
Steps 6–7: aftercare and a simple progress record
- Resume suitable skincare. A moisturiser can help keep acne-prone skin comfortable. Use prescribed acne treatments according to your clinician’s instructions, and apply daytime sun protection. There is no need to add several new active ingredients after a session.
- Track your course. Note completed treatments and take occasional photographs in the same light. Compare the number of inflamed spots and how your skin is behaving over weeks rather than judging a single evening.
If irritation or a worsening breakout develops, review the whole routine—including new skincare and medicines. Do not treat an uncomfortable reaction as proof that the programme is working.
Why blue and red light are used
Celluma describes its Acne programme as blue-light dominant, with other wavelengths contributing to the treatment design. Blue light interacts with light-sensitive compounds associated with acne bacteria; red light is studied for its effects on inflammatory responses. Read our blue and red light acne explainer for the evidence and its practical limits.
To choose a device, compare coverage, how you prefer to use it and the additional modes you need. Browse the Celluma devices or ask the team to demonstrate a compatible Acne programme.
Frequently asked questions
Should I apply salicylic acid before Celluma?
It is not required as preparation. Start a Celluma session on clean, bare, dry skin. Fit salicylic acid or other acne medicines into your routine according to their instructions and your clinician’s advice.
Can I use a serum during the session?
Follow the clean-skin instructions for your model. Apply skincare afterwards rather than assuming a clear or water-based serum is an approved treatment layer.
Will LED treatment prevent acne scars?
Treating active acne is valuable, but LED therapy cannot guarantee scar prevention or remove established scars. Seek prompt care for painful, deep or scarring acne.
Should I double the next session if I miss one?
Resume the instructed schedule. Increasing exposure to compensate is not a proven way to catch up. A manageable routine is more useful than occasional oversized sessions.
